Canning Inspires Winning Weekend
Oulton Park 220-6 (50)
Sale 221-5 (48.3)
Sale win by 5 Wickets

Sale 1st XI completed a league and cup double weekend, winning their top of the table clash against Oulton Park on Saturday and beating Oxton in the Cheshire Cup on Sunday.   The wins extended their lead at the top of the Vivio Cheshire County Cricket League division one to 8 points and set up a 4th round cup clash with ECB Premiership leaders Chester Boughton Hall.

Captain Chris Canning led from the front with a match winning innings of 83 and 82 not out as Sale chased down Oulton Park’s 220-6 to win by 5 wickets on Saturday and coasted home by 44 runs at Oxton on Sunday.

Search sponsored Sale asked Oulton Park to bat first but found wickets hard to come by on the excellent surface at Dane Road.  Danny Leach led the way for the visitors with 73 as they passed 130 for the loss of just 1 wicket.

Sale rotated the bowling well, with fifth change bowler Ali Barrowman claiming 3 wickets as the visitors were restricted to 220-6.

Sale got off to the worst possible start as both openers were dismissed for one run.  Tyrone Lawrence (63) led the rebuilding efforts firstly with Keith Wellings, then with Canning.

When Canning fell for 83, Sale still needed 48 off the last 5 overs, but the two Rob’s (Greenhough and Grant) kept their heads to see Sale home, both finishing on 27 not out.

Early morning rain reduced the Sunday cup game to 35 overs per side, but Sale soon made up for lost time as their leading batsmen dominated the Oxton attack.  Opener Ryan Rickelton made 79, number three Lawrence hit 44, and Canning an unbeaten 82 as Sale posted an imposing 228-6.

In reply Oxton made a confident start, adding 55 for the first wicket in even time.  However they were always behind the rate, and once Fernando was 4th man out for 57 Sale took control.

In the field Grant and Lawrence took 2 wickets each, with Dan Osborne claiming 3 stumpings.  Regular ‘keeper Canning handed the gloves over for the day, but remained in the thick of the action affecting two run outs as Oxton finished on 184-8.

The 2nd XI had a bad day with the bat after reducing Warrington to 155-9, only managing 83-8 in a losing draw.  Mike Wolanski (4 wickets) and Greg Gyves (3 wickets), both bowled well on the comeback trail from injury.

The 3rd XI game on Sunday was cancelled due to an unfit square.

Earlier in the week the over 40’s clash with Brooklands was cancelled and both senior teams suffered T20 cup defeats.  The 1st XI lost to Brooklands and the 2nd to Cheadle Hulme.

On Wednesday the over 40’s visit Bowdon.  On Saturday the 1st XI travel to promoted Davenham and the 2nd XI welcome Upton to Dane Road.  On Sunday the 3rd XI make the short trip to Cheadle.

The rain couldn't stop the under 11s on Sunday morning who defeated Didsbury in the Cup in a sudden-death bowl-off. With the pitch unplayable, the tie-breaker was held in the nets. All 22 players bowled. On debut, Sale's Saad Khan was one of only four bowlers to hit the stumps. Tied at 2-2, Saad's accuracy paid off again in sudden death, taking Sale through to the next round.

The under 10s overcame Stockport on Tuesday. Final pair, Callum Ross (18 and 1-6) and Theo Brodbeck again scored heavily and were well supported in the field by Harvey Devenport (2-1-2-1) and Joel Copeland with a wicket, a catch and a run out.

The under 9 Badgers lost a thriller at Bowden by one run. Robin Smith (26) and Ben Thomas almost made the 36 runs required from the final four overs. Rahul Minocha scored 20 and Arjun Amudalapalli took 2-7. The under 9 Squirrels competed well against Stretford. James Newhill (15) top scored for the Squirrels, and Shaheer Chaudhry provided the high point in the field with a memorable run out.

The under 13 Eagles lost in the Cup to a strong Brooklands side. James Layton (26) and Ibraheem Shareef (13) battled well for Sale.

The under 16s picked up a win and maintained their 100% record when opposition Winton conceded the fixture.
