With plenty of rain about on Saturday Sale 2nd XI took the opportunity to go 21 points clear at the top of division two of the Vivio Cheshire County Cricket League. With nearest challengers Stockport Georgians abandoning their match, Sale extended their lead with a 6 wicket win at Lindow.
Search sponsored Sale asked Lindow to bat first after a delayed start, they reached 50 for the loss of 2 wicket as Gareth Watterson removed both openers.
Abas Rizvi then took 2 quick wickets to reduce the home side to 61-5. Ryan Johnson and James Bracewell then added 71 for the 6th wicket.
It was Rizvi who broke the partnership, as he finished with 4-17 as Lindow closed on 137-8 off 48 overs. Watterson was next best with 3-38.
Despite losing a wicket in the first over, Sale never looked in danger as they knocked off the runs with 23 overs to spare. Young opener Viraj Soarthia (pictured above by George Franks) anchoring the innings with a measured 55 not out off 69 balls.
Rizvi (33 off 42 balls) and Siyan Siraj (30 off 31 balls) played with fluency as Sale reached their target for the loss of 4 wickets.
The 1st XI fixture at home to Upton was cancelled without a ball being bowled due to rain.
Sunday premier league leaders Sale 3rd XI were frustrated by Grappenhall as they couldn’t take the final wickets to secure an outright win.
Sale were asked to bat first, veteran opener Soans Praveen made a good start with 25.
Youngsters Dan Newton (39) and Mo Rizvi (41) were the backbone of the Sale innings as they reached a challenging 185-6.
After tea the visitors were content to bat out for a draw, which along with several dropped catches by Sale meant that the home side had to settle for a 14 points to 3 draw.
Nearest rivals Didsbury won closing the gap at the top of the league to 31 points, but with just two games left Sale remain favourites for the title.
Sale 4th XI remained top of division three east despite losing at Ashley. Dennis Gornall top scored with 26 as Sale were bowled out for a below par 120.
Ashley reached their target for the loss of 7 wickets as Sale picked up 7 points to stay 8 points clear of Lindow.
On Saturday the 1st XI travel to Oxton and the 2nd XI welcome Congleton to Dane Road. On Sunday the 3rd XI visit Bramhall and the 4th XI lost Cheadle Hulme.
