A REMARKABLE SHOWING OF THE TV REAL-LIFE DRAMA MARVELLOUS
Bar Open at 7.00 p.m. – show starts at 7.30
"Marvellous" won the BAFTA in 2015 for the best single drama on British TV. It has been described as the ultimate feel-good film.
It tells the extraordinary story of Neil Baldwin, who has defied the labels which the education system and various professionals put on him, to achieve his goals in life. These have included being a circus clown, being appointed by Lou Macari as the kit man for Stoke City and actually making an appearance on the pitch for the Club, welcoming students to Keele University and being a friend of many archbishops and bishops. As well as the BAFTA, he has been given the Freedom of both Stoke-on-Trent and his hometown of Newcastle-under-Lyme, an Honorary Degree from Keele University and the British Empire medal.
Neil is played by Toby Jones (famous for playing "Mr.Bates" in the Post Office drama, among many other films). The film portrays his relationships with his loving mother, Mary (played by Gemma Jones whose performance won the BAFTA for the best supporting female actor) who was determined to let him do whatever he wanted to do whilst being constantly worried about what he was getting up to; with Lou Macari, who makes cameo appearances as himself in the film, as does 'real' Neil himself, and with his lifelong friend, Malcolm Clarke (played by Greg McHugh).
The film will be introduced by the "real" Malcolm, who lives in Sale, and after the showing Malcolm, and the "real" Neil himself, will have a Q & A with the audience. You may need to have a few tissues on hand - mainly for tears of laughter but also for a few moments of pathos.
Entrance is FREE but you are asked to make a donation to charity of £5-£10 to the Lou Macari Centre for the homeless in Stoke-on-Trent
